Wildcat Soccer Falls to #16 Stanford

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Four first-half goals gave 16th-ranked Stanford all the momentum it needed to roll to a 5-2 win over the University of Arizona women's soccer team in front of a crowd of 911 at Murphey Stadium on Friday night.

Stanford's Marcia Wallis put the Cardinal on the board early, denting the net at 5:55 off a Kelly Adamson assist. Barely two minutes later, senior Ronnie Fair struck for Stanford off a direct kick. Freshman Kelsey Carlson dribbled through the Wildcat defense to put the Cardinal up, 3-0, at 25:02, then Fair scored her second goal of the night in the 40th minute.

Arizona broke the shutout with just 22 seconds remaining in the first half, when sophomore midfielder MARISA PADULA (Potomac, MD/Winston Churchill HS) sent a corner kick into the box to set up junior midfielder BROOKE McMANUS' (Escondido, CA/San Pasqual HS) goal.

The Cardinal's Carlson notched her second goal of the contest at 55:31, taking a through ball from midfielder Martha West. The Wildcats were able to hold Stanford off for the remainder of the match and got their second goal from junior forward CHRISSY SANFORD (Newbury, CA/Newbury Park HS). Sophomore forward KIM McGEHEE (San Diego, CA/La Costa Canyon HS) assisted the goal.

On a three-game losing skid, Arizona slips to 6-7-0 overall and 0-4-0 in Pac-10 play. Stanford extends its win streak to six matches and improves to 10-3-0 overall and 3-0-0 in the Pac-10. The Wildcats continue their three-game home stand on Sunday, Oct. 17, against California at 1 p.m.
