Women's Soccer Falls To No. 11 USC In Pac-10 Opener

LOS ANGELES The No. 11 USC women's soccer team defeated the Arizona Wildcats, 6-0, on Friday afternoon at the Coliseum in their Pac-10 opener.

USC improved to 8-3 overall and 1-0 in the conference. Arizona fell to 6-5, 0-2.

Three USC players scored their first collegiate goals: sophomore forward Christy Callier (San Diego/University City HS), who scored twice; and sophomore forward Brittany Savelkoul (Seal Beach/Los Alamitos HS) and freshman midfielder Tawny Flores (Los Angeles/Santa Monica HS), who each scored once. Junior midfielder Isabelle Harvey (Quebec, Canada) and junior defender Katie Ticehurst (Los Alamitos/Mater Dei HS) each had a goal and an assist.

"Our first goal was accomplished, as we started Pac-10 play with a victory," USC Coach Jim Millinder said. "We had a complete effort. It was nice to be able to play everyone and see some different players do well."

It didn't take USC long to score, as Ticehurst took a clearance pass and kicked one in from 35 yards out in the fourth minute of play. Three minutes later, Ticehurst's cross found Harvey at the top of the penalty box, and Harvey's blast made it inside the right post.

Off assists from freshman midfielder Laura Foster (Del Mar/Bishop's) and freshman forward Jennifer Prigmore (Norman, OK/North HS), an unmarked Flores took the ball from about 20 yards out, and with the goalkeeper out of position, she knocked it in in the 39th minute to give USC a 3-0 halftime lead.

Callier's goals came in the 50th and 58th minutes. On the first, she headed in a cross by Harvey. On the second, a goal kick was directed right to her, and she kicked it right back into the net.

Savelkoul ended the scoring in the 89th minute, finishing a chance after nice passes from senior midfielder Kim Clark (Cupertino/Monta Vista HS) and junior forward Kaylee Whitfield (Santa Ana/El Modena HS).

USC outshot Arizona, 26-8, and needed only two goalie saves to earn its sixth shutout of the season.

USC continues its homestand with a match against Arizona State on Sunday (Oct. 10) at 1 p.m. at McAlister Field.
