Soccer Records Second Straight Shutout
TUCSON, Ariz. (Oct. 1) - Junior goalkeeper Inger Airheart (Roseville, CA/Oakmont HS) racked up a career-high-tying 10 saves en route to her first shutout of the season as the University of Arizona women's soccer team edged Pepperdine, 1-0, in front of a crowd of 611 in Murphey Stadium on Friday night.
The lone goal of the game was set up by junior forward Chrissy Sanford (Newbury, CA/Newbury Park HS), who fired a shot which was deflected off Wave goalkeeper Lindsey Brouillette. The rebound landed in front of sophomore forward Kristi Loroa (Tucson, AZ/Canyon del Oro HS), and she dented the net at the 21:23 mark for her first goal of the season.
Arizona had the edge over Pepperdine in shots too, 15-14, with Loroa's four leading the Cats. Pepperdine freshman Tasha Spangler recorded a game-high five shots, and goalkeeper Brouillette made six saves.
The shutout was Arizona's second straight and second of the year. This marks the first time in three years that the Cats have had back-to-back shutouts, and it gives Airheart her eighth career blanking.
The Wildcats improve to 5-4-0 overall, and Pepperdine moves to 4-3-1. Arizona remains home for another non-conference match on Sunday, Oct. 3, against Wyoming at 1 p.m. at Murphey Stadium.
