Cats Fall at UTEP, 4-3

El Paso, Texas-- The UTEP women's soccer team toppled Arizona, 4-3, tonight at the Charlie Davis Field in El Paso, Texas. The game was the first-ever contest held under the facility's newly-erected stadium lighting. With the win the Miners improve to 5-2-1 on the season, while the Wildcats drop to 3-4-0.

UTEP, held scoreless for the past two games, found its offense behind sophomore Kim Rogers, who tallied two goals and an assist on the night.

Rogers opened the scoring at the 7:48 mark, directing the rebound of classmate Laura Glasspoole's corner kick into the lower-left corner of the net. Arizona would even the score when sophomore Tiffany Sabado controlled a loose ball in the UTEP goal box and fired from three yards out.

The Miners climbed back on top with a score from freshman Valerie Argueta at the 28:21 mark. Argueta, streaking down the right side, took a pass from Rogers and launched an arcing 30-yard blast that found the opposite side of the net.

Arizona started the second half with an offensive surge that resulted in a tally by junior Brooke McManus, who headed in a loose corner kick from Chrissy Sanford and tied the game at 2-2 just two minutes into the period. The Miners answered eight minutes later when sophomore Stacy White's free kick found Glasspoole making a run at the Wildcats' goal. Glasspoole sent home the shot for her second score of the year.

UTEP struck again at the 78:50 mark when defender Stephanie Merrell played a loose ball to freshman Katherine McShane, who in turn found Rogers moving across centerfield. Rogers turned on the ball and fired from 15 yards out, sending the shot off the right post and into the net for the eventual game-winner.

Arizona's Chrissy Sanford broke through the Miner defense to score her seventh goal of the season with under three minutes to play, but the Miners would run out the clock to secure the victory. In the nets, UTEP's Amanda Smith chalked up six saves on the night for her fifth win of the season, while Arizona's Inger Airheart made four stops.

The Wildcats will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 25, when they face Arkansas-Little Rock in a neutral contest at UTEP. Gametime is slated for noon MDT.
