Arizona Soccer Falls To #14 Baylor
Tucson, Ariz. -- A trio of goals early in the first half gave the 14th-ranked Baylor women's soccer team the momentum it needed to put away Arizona, 4-1, in front of a crowd of 596 in Tucson on Friday night.
Baylor sophomore forward Alyson Miles rocketed a shot in from outside the box only seven minutes into the first half, putting the Bears on the board early. Fellow sophomore Juli Goin sent Baylor up, 2-0, at the 20:09 mark off an assist by Rachel Kacsmaryk. Barely two minutes later, senior forward Courtney Saunders made it 3-0, with Gina Castellano assisting. The Cats were able to hold Baylor off for part of the second half, but Saunders struck again at 67:51 off a pass by Goin.
Arizona finally broke the shutout at the 82:24 mark, when a shot by sophomore forward Tiffany Sabado (Kaneohe, HI/Castle HS) bounced off a Baylor defender and landed at the feet of fellow sophomore Kim McGehee (San Diego, CA/La Costa Canyon HS), who sent the ball into the net.
Baylor outshot Arizona, 16-12. In the nets, the Cats used sophomore Shannon Monti (Phoenix, AZ/Shadow Mountain HS) and junior Inger Airheart (Roseville, CA/Oakmont HS) each for a half, with Monti allowing the first three goals. For Baylor, junior goalkeeper Dawn Greathouse played 78 shutout minutes; sophomore Jillian Dreyer gave up the goal to the Cats.
The Cats drop to 3-3-0 on the season, while Baylor, on a five-game win streak, improves to 6-1-0. Next up for Arizona is a trip to El Paso, Texas, where the Cats will take on Texas-El Paso and Arkansas-Little Rock on Sept. 23 and 25, respectively.
