Wildcat Women Ink Three on First Day
TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Arizona women's basketball program has signed three players on the first day of the early signing period, announced head coach Joan Bonvicini on Wednesday. CANDICE ALLEN, AIMEE GRZYB and VERANDA JAMES will all join the Wildcats for the 2 season.
Candice Allen is a 5-10 guard from Ruben S. Ayala High School in Ontario, Calif. As a junior, she averaged 19.7 points, 9 assists and 7 rebounds per game while leading her team to a 27-4 mark for the 1998-99 season.
Allen was named an honorable mention USA Today All-American and was chosen to the L.A. Times All-Star Team. She was selected first team All-CIF and All-Inland Valley, and as both a sophomore and a junior, she earned Student Sports All-American honors.
"Candice is an exciting player to watch," said Bonivicini, who is beginning her ninth season at the helm of the Arizona program. "She makes a lot happen with the ball and is a slasher to the basket. She comes from a winning program and knows what it takes to be a part of a championship-caliber team."
At 5-7, Aimee Grzyb (pronounced GRIB) is a point guard from Archbishop Mitty High School in San Jose, Calif., a program which won the California state championship in 1999 with a perfect 31-0 record. The team is preseason ranked No. 1 in California and No. 9 in the nation by USA Today.
Grzyb recorded averages of 16 points, 5 assists and 4 rebounds per game as a junior last year. She was named first team All-BVAL, All-CIF Division I and All-CCS. Chosen as her team's Offensive MVP, Grzyb was also selected selected to the Cal Hi Sports Top 20 Junior Girls Basketball Players for the state of California.
"Aimee is an excellent passer and an outstanding three-point shooter," said Bonvicini. "She is a great leader, as well as a proven winner and intense competitor"
The third player, Veranda James, is a 6-3 post player for Ganesha High School in Pomona, Calif. James registered 25.7 points, 15 rebounds and 7 blocks per game while leading Ganesha to a 25-4 mark in 1998-99. She was the Valley Vista League Most Valuable Player last year and was selected first team All-CIF Division III. James was a first team All-Inland Valley selection, as well, and was recently named the school's Homecoming Queen.
"Veranda will be a major player at Arizona," said Bonvicini. "She is an excellent athlete, a good scorer and just an all-around great person. She, Aimee and Candice will all be great additions to our program."
The Wildcats will play an exhibition game against the New Zealand National Team at home on Thursday, Nov. 11, at 7 p.m. They officially tip off the season at the Hawaiian Regent Classic in Honolulu on Nov. 19-21.
