Washington Post-Game Quotes

Arizona Men's Basketball
January 15, 2000
Washington @ Arizona
UW Head Coach Bob Bender

"We came out and gave ourselves a chance today, so I'm proud of that. To have competed like we did today was good for our team. Night in and night out we must play like that in order to win games. We run a play-oriented offense compared to a hurry up offense. It is slow paced but we needed to make adjustments after the game last Thursday against Arizona State."

"Thursday's game at ASU told us that we couldn't play up and down and try to outscore people. Controlling the tempo will work a lot better for us. Our offense will be half court and our defense will also be half court. It definitely helped our rebounding today because it gave us more time to get in position to get some boards."

"I think that two plays at the end of the game were the difference. I'm awfully proud of our team although we're 6-10 overall, 1-3 in league. We're not hitting the panic button yet. This year still holds a lot of good things for us."

Washington Player Quotes
Arizona vs. Washington-McKale Center
January 15, 2000

Forward Chris Wolcott:
"We gave a great effort out their on the court today, probably the best all year. With our performance today, we've seen what we can do with one of the top teams in the country. We just have to carry it over for the rest of the season so we can win some ball games. I think everybody can be pleased with the team's effort tonight.

"In the first half, we did a good job of slowing the ball down and neutralizing their big men. We kept with it thoughout the game and with a couple of fouls here and a couple of buckets dropping our way, it would have been a different ballgame.

"We need to work on protecting the ball. We fought to the end and did what we could to keep ourselves in the game."

On Loren Woods:
"He's got a big body, but what's different about him is that he runs the court better than most big men. He's a great player and will do great things in his career."

Guard Michael Johnson
"The effort was there. We certainly competed at a high level, but we just didn't execute at the end."

On player Arizona:
"We had to get up for this game or we would get blown out. That's the mentality you have to have when you're playing a top-ranked team on their home court.

"Coach told us to slow the ball down, and that really played to our advantage in the first half. But more importantly, we need to push the ball when we have numbers, because that was a big difference between the first and second halves.

"It was an off day shooting for me. I need to knock down those outside shots, but I'll continue to keep my head up and shooting the ball." "When you come into this building you better be able to stop runs and that made the difference. Arizona's ranking is well deserved and well earned. I think a game like this one is not a knock on Arizona but a credit to the Pac-10. A good example is what we saw UCLA do at North Carolina today. The Pac-10 is just so strong, top to bottom."
